Roger Federer's six-year record of reaching 23 Grand Slam semi-finals was washed away yesterday when he crashed out in the French Open quarter-finals.
The Swiss world No.1, who had not missed out on the last four at one of the major tournaments since 2004, suffered a shock 3-6 6-3 7-5 6-4 defeat to Swede Robin Soderling in a rain-disrupted clash.
Federer said: "I didn't think I played a bad match but he came up with some great tennis. I'm not blaming the conditions but they were in his favour towards the end."
Fifth seed Soderling said: "It's a big win but it's not the Final. I don't want to celebrate too much. I want to focus on the next game."
The Swede will take on Andy Murray conqueror Tomas Berdych, who thrashed Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-3 6-1 6-2, for a place in the Final. Rafa Nadal will reclaim the No.1 ranking next week if he wins the title. The Spaniard faces countryman Nicolas Almargo in today's last-eight clash.
Francesca Schiavone became the first Italian since 1954 to reach the French Open women's singles semi-finals after a shock 6-2 6-3 win over Danish No. 3 seed Caroline Wozniacki.
Schiavone's next opponent is No. 5 seed Elena Dementieva, who saw off fellow Russian Nadia Petrova 2-6 6-2 6-0. (http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk)
